John Lennon’s Doorman Remembers the Singer’s Last Words to Him After He Was Shot
Jay Hastings, who worked at the Dakota in New York City when John Lennon and his wife Yoko Ono Lennon lived there, has spoken up about the late singer’s final night. “He [Lennon] came running up, immediately after hearing gunshots, and he’s like, ‘I’m shot, I’m shot,’ and he just ran past me to the back office, and just collapsed,” Hastings said.
“I had no idea how badly he was shot,” Hastings continued. “I went into the back office, and Yoko [Ono, John Lennon’s wife] was right behind him, screaming, ‘Get an ambulance.'” ‘Call an ambulance.'”
Mark David Chapman shot and killed John Lennon on December 8, 1980.
When Hastings discovered Chapman was still outside, he “grabbed the billy club on top of the safe” and walked “down the stairs, because I was going to clock this guy, because I was afraid he was going to get away.”
The interview takes place just before the premiere of Apple’s docuseries “John Lennon: Murder Without a Trial.” Kiefer Sutherland narrates the three-part series, which chronicles Lennon’s killing, the subsequent trial, and the strategy used by Chapman’s defense team.
Lennon was assassinated outside his New York City residence. Chapman confessed to officials at the crime site and told a parole board in 2022, “I am not going to blame anything else or anybody else for bringing me there. I knew what I was doing, and I knew it was evil, I knew it was wrong, but I wanted the fame so much that I was willing to give everything and take a human life.”
“This was evil in my heart. I wanted to be somebody and nothing was going to stop that,” he added. Chapman is serving a life sentence at Green Haven Correctional Facility and has been denied release several times.
