Photographers and surfers marvel at the massive waves on the Jersey Shore
The recent storm caused significant damage in certain areas of New Jersey, particularly in Bay Head.
The Jersey Shore witnessed an unforgettable surf that attracted surfers and photographers alike. Mother Nature showcased waves of unprecedented height, leaving a lasting impression on those who witnessed it.
Photographer Ryan Simalchik captured the breathtaking moment as a surfer fearlessly descended what appeared to be a drop of approximately two stories in Bay Head, Ocean County on Monday.
According to Simalchik, the waves on Monday were estimated to be around 15 to 20 feet in size, with occasional sets reaching up to 25 feet.
Photographer Ryan Mack skillfully captured breathtaking footage.
“It felt incredibly surreal because as I sat there, I couldn’t believe that there were 20-foot waves crashing in just five minutes away from my house. This kind of spectacle is usually expected in places like Hawaii or Portugal, not in our own backyard,” Mack expressed.
All the photographers and a surfer who spoke to CBS New York expressed that they experienced unforgettable waves.
“It’s hard to find the right words to describe them, but I would say they were angry, incredibly powerful,” shared the surfer.
Robbie Goodwin, a 19-year-old avid surfer who has been riding waves since the age of 5, embarked on an exciting road trip from Cape Cod to New Jersey as soon as he caught wind of the promising surf forecast.
According to Goodwin, the waves possess a distinctive quality. The water is frigid and exceptionally dark, which gives the barrels a daunting and extraordinary appearance. Goodwin stated, “Throughout the experience, you can’t help but scream in exhilaration as you gaze at the waves, discussing with your friends how mind-boggling it is, and relishing in the sheer power.”
Dave Nilsen captured breathtaking shots of the surfer plunging into the water from a remarkable height.
According to Nilsen, there are times when a significant swell occurs, but strong offshore winds prevent surfers from experiencing its true size. However, on that particular day, the wind turned offshore early, providing surfers with an excellent opportunity to hit the waves.
According to him, only a small number of individuals, around 10 or 15, actually attempted it. He mentioned that many others chose not to participate, as they perceived it as a risky endeavor.
Pat Nolan is a freelance writer who contributes to surf publications.
“We were incredibly fortunate. The conditions aligned perfectly, with the winds coming together just right. It was like the perfect storm,” Nolan expressed with gratitude. “I’ve been fortunate enough to travel to various parts of the world and chase swells, but nothing quite compares to what we witnessed on Monday. It’s a feeling that brings me back to my roots in New Jersey.”
The consensus is that the swell on the Jersey Shore was a unique and unforgettable event, with everyone hoping for a similar occurrence in the future.
“It was a truly unforgettable day, one that will be etched in my memory forever. I sincerely hope that we have the opportunity to experience another day like this soon, as it is moments like these that give us purpose and make life worth living,” expressed Simalchik.
