Alabama Woman Sentenced to Federal Prison for Committing Racist Acts Against Black Neighbor: “Orange Is the New White Supremacy”
Alabama has a reputation for being true to its roots and traditions. As they say, “Alabama gon’ Alabama.”
Instances of blatant racism are often exhibited by individuals who feel emboldened because they do not believe they will face any consequences for their actions. However, this is a mistaken belief, as recent events have shown that there are repercussions for such behaviour. For example, a viral video of a Montgomery riverfront brawl demonstrates that such behaviour is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. Additionally, in the case of Ahmaud Arbery’s murder, his killers filed to overturn their hate crime convictions, claiming that their racist remarks were unrelated to hunting down the Black jogger, but justice was ultimately served.
Atlanta Black Star reports that Cheryl Lynn Pytleski, a 64-year-old resident of Ozark, Alabama, has been sentenced to one year in federal prison for violating the Fair Housing Act.

The Department of Justice addressed the case in a statement that was released. The Fair Housing Act considers it a violation if someone intentionally injures, intimidates, or interferes with any individual due to race, colour, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, or national origin. This includes anyone selling, purchasing, renting, financing, occupying, or contracting for any dwelling. Threats or using force to accomplish this also fall under the violation category.
The maximum punishment for FHA violations is a 12-month sentence, which can be an incredibly harsh penalty to face, especially for someone who is 64 years old. Spending a year behind bars can be a painful and traumatic experience for anyone.
