Get ready to feel shivers down your spine as you step into the former asylum in Upstate New York, renowned for its eerie reputation. The facility has now been deemed as downright terrifying, giving visitors an experience they won’t forget.
HGTV recently released a list of the scariest places in every state. The Rolling Hills Asylum in Genesee County, New York, takes the top spot for being the eeriest place in the state. With a history as a poorhouse where over 1,700 people perished, paranormal experts believe that the asylum is still brimming with otherworldly activity. This Halloween, the creepy location has finally been recognized for its spooky reputation.
Rolling Hills is just one of the many haunted sites that exist across the United States. Other notable locations include the Sloss Furnaces of Alabama, where countless workers lost their lives, and Bonaventure Cemetery in Georgia, the creepy graveyard that was featured on the cover of โMidnight in the Garden of Good and Evilโ.
Rolling Hills reports that the East Bethany asylum, infamous for its dark past, was founded in 1827 within the walls of an old stagecoach tavern. Originally named the Genesee County Poorhouse, the facility housed a wide range of individuals, including “habitual drunkards,” “lunatics,” and those who were impoverished, disabled, widowed, or orphaned.
Rolling Hills referred to all residents of the poorhouse as “inmates”. The physically able individuals were assigned to work on the farm, which included tasks such as animal husbandry, vegetable cultivation, bakery operations, and constructing coffins.
Numerous bodies found their final resting place in the potter’s field. However, over time, the cemetery fell into disrepair and became overgrown with plants after the asylum’s closure in 1974.
Many ghost hunters have been drawn to the closure of Rolling Hills in hopes of uncovering the eerie secrets of the former asylum.
The haunted history of Rolling Hills has captured the attention of many, and some of its ghostly encounters have even been featured on television. The asylum is known for its famous spirits, such as Roy, who resided in the facility from the age of 12 until his death at 62 due to gigantism, and Nurse Emmie, an infirmary worker notorious for her cruelty and alleged involvement in Satanic rituals. The Travel Channel has compiled a list of the asylum’s most renowned ghosts, including these two.
Rolling Hills Asylum offers a range of exciting activities, including guided tours, ghost hunts, and even weddings. As one of the most haunted sites in the United States, the former poorhouse has been dubbed the second most haunted site by Haunted North America. Visitors can also explore the asylum as part of the Haunted History Trail of New York State.
Visitors to the asylum can explore its rich history through the various artifacts left behind, including crates, dolls, chairs, and even bathtubs. Many brave tourists seize the chance to snap eerie selfies while perched in these tubs, adding to the thrill of the experience.
