GHS student arrested for bringing a gun to school
Greenville High School (GHS) was placed under emergency lockdown at approximately 10:45 a.m. following a report received by administrators that a student was believed to be in possession of a firearm on campus.
The Greenville Police Department quickly responded and arrived at the school to locate the student involved. They discovered a revolver among the student’s belongings, leading to the immediate arrest and custody of the student without any complications.
After the student was arrested, Greenville Police Chief Justin Lovvorn clarified that there were rumors of another weapon inside the school. However, upon further investigation, no evidence was found to substantiate these rumors.
According to Lovvorn, after tracing the source of the information, they discovered that it was merely a rumor with no factual basis. The initial statement lacked any concrete details, but they decided to conduct an investigation as a precautionary measure.
A former graduate of GHS, who now resides out-of-state, made a warning call to the school on Thursday morning. The source shared that they had discovered the offender’s plan through a social media platform.
The sophomore student, whose identity remains confidential due to being a minor, will be relocated to a juvenile detention center in Montgomery. He will remain there until his trial in Greenville.
According to Lovvorn, the judge will determine the date for the trial and proceed to establish the charges. Afterward, the judge will make a decision regarding the length of the sentence. Lovvorn explains, “He could either return to the detention center or, if necessary, he could be directed towards rehabilitation. There are various possibilities in this situation.”
Some parents of students raised concerns about not being contacted immediately during the lockdown. Superintendent Joseph Eiland acknowledged the parents’ concerns and empathized with them.
“I completely understand why parents would want to be informed in a situation like this,” Eiland expressed. “It would have been ideal for the school to send out a prompt notification. During the lockdown, the school administration prioritized working closely with the police to investigate the incident and ensure the safety of the students above all else.”
Lovvorn has been advocating for the implementation of metal detectors at the schools for quite some time. He emphasized his commitment to collaborating with the school and exploring alternative options to secure the necessary resources for the prompt installation of the detectors.
Eiland states that the Butler County School Board has finally acquired the necessary funds to procure the metal detectors. However, the exact installation date for these detectors remains unknown.
“We are planning to have an early morning meeting with Chief Lovvorn to seek expert advice on improving our school’s security,” Eiland explained. “Aside from implementing metal detectors, detecting potential threats can be quite challenging.”
