Recently Released Convict Shoots Innocent Victim Outside Local New York Deli in Broad Daylight
The residents of a Bronx community are in disbelief after a disturbing incident of violence occurred. The perpetrator in question is Miguel Diaz, who had recently been released from prison.
Damian Williams, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, along with James Smith from the FBI and Edward A. Caban from the NYPD, made a chilling announcement on Tuesday, October 24, 2023. They revealed a Complaint against Diaz, who is accused of opening fire outside a Bronx deli. As a result, one victim was left nursing a bullet wound in their arm. The details of the accusation were disclosed in the announcement.
Diaz is a name that law enforcement has encountered before. Recently, he was apprehended and brought before U.S. Magistrate Judge Katharine H. Parker. The nature of his purported offense is enough to make one’s blood run cold.
Williams’s comment on the matter is as follows: “As alleged, Miguel Diaz, who had been previously convicted of reckless endangerment, fired a bullet outside a deli in broad daylight at the corner of Edward L. Grant Highway and Jesup Avenue in the Bronx. Thanks to the prompt action taken by our law enforcement partners and the prosecutors of this Office, Diaz will now face the consequences of his alleged reckless and violent actions.”
Caban, who shared the same concern, emphasized that the NYPD has made remarkable progress in reducing shootings by 26% this year in New York City. However, the ongoing gun violence remains a pressing issue that endangers the safety of everyone who resides, works, and visits the city. Caban added that the people of New York City can count on the unwavering commitment of the NYPD and law enforcement professionals to continue their efforts to investigate and apprehend individuals who recklessly carry and use illegal firearms on the streets.
Let’s now take a closer look at the nitty-gritty specifics:
At approximately 6:00 p.m. on October 4, 2023, Diaz was captured on surveillance video as he walked southbound towards the intersection of Edward L. Grant Highway and Jesup Avenue. He loitered outside a deli in the Bronx for a few minutes before seizing an opportunity. When an unsuspecting victim exited the deli, Diaz approached them from behind, drew out a firearm, and fired a single shot. After stowing the weapon away, he fled the scene.
In addition, a 9mm FC Luger shell casing was discovered by NYPD officers at the location. What’s even more shocking is that Diaz, who had a previous felony conviction for reckless endangerment, wasn’t permitted to have ammunition in his possession. It’s worth noting that Diaz had been released from state custody merely four months before the incident after serving almost five years in prison.
As per reports, Diaz has been charged with possession of ammunition after a felony conviction which could lead to a potential sentence of 15 long years behind the bars.
It’s important to keep in mind that Diaz should still be regarded as innocent until proven guilty, despite the surprising news.
