DA: Suspect wanted in deadly shooting at Worcester State University captured in New York

Suspect in fatal shooting at Worcester State University apprehended in New York

According to law enforcement officials, a man suspected of a deadly shooting at Worcester State University has been apprehended in New York. The young man was wanted for his alleged involvement in the tragic incident that resulted in loss of life. The authorities have successfully captured him and he will now face the consequences of his actions.

According to the Worcester District Attorney’s Office, Kevin Rodriguez, an 18-year-old suspect, was apprehended on Thursday morning due to a warrant issued related to a shooting incident on the campus of the university on October 28. The shooting caused the death of a 19-year-old man, as reported by Boston25News.

Rodriguez has been charged with multiple offenses, including unlawful possession of a firearm and armed assault with intent to murder in connection with the death of Randy Armando Melendez Jr. from Southbridge.

Rodriguez was apprehended with the combined efforts of the Worcester Police Department, Worcester State University Police, Massachusetts State Police, the Massachusetts State Police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section, and the U.S. Marshals Service. Their collaborative work led to the successful tracking down of Rodriguez.

After a 911 call, the authorities from Worcester State University Police arrived at the site of the shooting incident. The police found two men, one being Melendez, with bullet injuries.

Tragically, Melendez succumbed to his injuries, while the other victim, a young man of 21 years, was admitted to the hospital with injuries that are thankfully not life-threatening.

According to Randy Melendez’s family, the apprehension of Rodriguez is a positive development, but it doesn’t alter the situation at hand.

According to Boston 25 News, the parents of the victim expressed that their son had no acquaintance with Rodriguez, and it was just a matter of being at the wrong place at the wrong time.

As per the legal records, the gunfire occurred as a result of a confrontation between two groups on the campus premises. A video was captured by a cell phone from a dormitory nearby at the time of the incident.

Due to the shooting incident, school administrators had to make the difficult decision of cancelling the highly anticipated homecoming and parents’ weekend events. Additionally, all classes on Monday had to be cancelled as well. The unfortunate incident caused a significant disturbance to the campus community and required immediate action to ensure the safety of all students and faculty members.

The incident has prompted a thorough examination of the security protocols at the university.

The president of Worcester State University has released a statement emphasizing the safety and security of their campus. In the statement, the president reassures students, faculty, and staff that their well-being is of utmost importance. To ensure the safety of everyone on campus, counseling services will remain available, and there will be an increased police presence and security measures in place for as long as necessary.

According to security expert Dan Linskey from Boston, Worcester State, just like other universities, needs to be prepared to adjust their security measures in response to the reality that criminal activities happening outside of campus can easily spill over into the campus grounds.

According to Linskey, every major city, including Worcester, faces crime challenges. To effectively combat these challenges, it is important to employ a comprehensive policing program that covers both on-campus and off-campus areas.

The university sent a letter to parents earlier this week, informing them that they will be introducing more safety measures. The details of these measures will be announced shortly.

The authorities are still conducting an investigation into the tragic shootings that occurred at Worcester State University. Updates on the case are yet to be released as the investigation is still ongoing.

As this story evolves, be sure to keep checking back for further updates as additional details become known.
