Desk duty assigned to NYPD officer after video reveals failure to assist boss in subway beatdown

According to officials, an NYPD officer was caught on video simply standing by and watching as two men ruthlessly attacked a lieutenant on a subway car in the Bronx. As a result, the officer has been put on desk duty and his gun has been taken away. This incident has sparked outrage and raised concerns about police officers not intervening in violent situations. The NYPD has vowed to investigate the matter thoroughly and take appropriate action.

According to police sources, a 68-second video clip captured Police Officer Manual Morales, a seasoned officer with nearly two decades of experience, holding open a subway door while observing Lieutenant Gypsy Pichardo being violently assaulted at the 238th Street No. 1 train station on November 11th.

According to reports, Officer Pichardo and Morales were called to the scene of a reported knife fight at approximately 9 p.m. Upon arriving, the two officers instructed the men on the train to disembark. It was at this point that the lieutenant was purportedly assaulted.

According to records, Morales, who earned $144,986 in 2022, was suspended just two days after the incident.

According to an NYPD spokesperson, the officer is currently undergoing modifications as part of an ongoing internal affairs investigation.

“Currently, the lieutenant is recuperating in the comfort of his own home following his injuries.”

According to a spokesperson, the gun belonging to the officer was confiscated.

Morales was immediately called out by other officers.

Upon viewing the footage, a seasoned police officer expressed their disdain and labeled the action as an act of cowardice.

“If he’s unwilling to assist his fellow officers, then he shouldn’t be in his current position.”

A veteran police officer expressed his embarrassment at the video which depicted a fellow officer standing back while a beating was taking place.

The law enforcement officer exclaimed, “It’s time for him to retire.”

According to reports, he allegedly did not request any assistance despite the situation. He maintains that he did, but there is no evidence of any radio transmissions being made. Furthermore, it has been revealed that he failed to activate his body camera during the incident.

In his years of experience, the seasoned police officer has advised his younger colleagues to actively participate and take necessary actions to assist their fellow officers that may be in danger. He stresses the importance of looking out for each other and being there for support during trying times on the job.

One advice that he frequently shares with younger officers is to “pull their hair if you have to”. This may sound extreme, but it emphasizes the importance of being assertive and taking control of a situation when necessary. He believes that sometimes, being firm and direct is the only way to get things done. While this may not always be the most pleasant approach, it can be effective in certain situations. Overall, his advice highlights the importance of standing up for oneself and being confident in one’s abilities.

“If necessary, don’t hesitate to use force. This is a fight, and you need to be prepared to do whatever it takes to defend yourself.”

According to another senior police officer, while he does not condone the inaction, he points to the City Council rules that limit how officers can make arrests and the Civilian Complaint Review Board that subjects officers to administrative trials for carrying out their duties.

The police officer emphasized that he was not condoning the actions of the individual in question, but he pointed out that the circumstances may have contributed to the situation. “They made it this way,” he stated, acknowledging that there may have been external factors at play that led to the incident.

The days of physical altercations seem to be a thing of the past. Nowadays, people are more hesitant to get into physical altercations, and the phrase “nobody wants to put their hands on anyone anymore” seems to ring true.

According to records, Morales has received four complaints and 11 allegations during his tenure with the NYPD since 2004.

Based on the record, one of the complainants was uncooperative, while five complaints were withdrawn. Additionally, four of the complaints were deemed unfounded, and one was labeled as unsubstantiated.

According to law enforcement officials, Marquise Webb and Brian Innocent, who are both 24 years old, were taken into custody for reportedly engaging in a physical assault.

According to records, they faced charges of assault against a police officer, criminal possession of a weapon, resisting arrest, and obstruction of governmental administration.

They were both detained on Rikers Island after being held on a $40,000 cash bail or $120,000 bond.

On Monday, a police officer and his partner were involved in a scuffle at a subway station in the Bronx. The officer was beaten by the suspects after he and his partner asked them to put out their cigarettes. This incident comes after another police officer was injured in a previous altercation at a subway station. The safety of law enforcement officers in New York City remains a concern, especially in high-risk areas such as subway stations.

According to Lou Turco, President of the Lieutenants Benevolent Association, criminals are not afraid to engage in altercations with police officers as they are well aware that they are unlikely to face any consequences for their actions.

“Heartbreaking and appalling,” he expressed in response to the video, adding, “Although the content is disturbing, it sadly aligns with the current state of our society.”

According to recent observations, there has been a steady increase in the number of officers being subjected to assaults. This is a concerning trend that has been witnessed on a regular basis.

Unfortunately, attempts to contact Morales were unsuccessful, and the Police Benevolent Association, the union he belongs to, did not respond to inquiries for a statement.
