Food stamps: January SNAP payments of up to $1,751 will be distributed to California residents in four days

In just four days, residents of California will receive the initial payment for January from CalFresh, the state’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. This payment, which can reach up to $1,751, will provide much-needed support for individuals and families.

SNAP, a program that offers food assistance to individuals and families with low incomes, distributes benefits in California during the first ten days of each month. The specific arrival date of the benefits depends on the recipient’s case numbers.

California recipients received their CalFresh benefits on different dates based on their case numbers. For example, those with case numbers ending in 1 received their benefits on Jan. 1, while those with case numbers ending in 2 received their benefits on Jan. 2. This pattern of payment dates continues until Jan. 10, when individuals with case numbers ending in zero will receive their payments.

The amount of benefits a household will receive varies based on factors such as the size of the household, income limits, and additional assets. For instance, a household of one can receive a maximum payment of $291, while a household of four can receive up to $973, and a household of eight can receive up to $1,751. If there are more than eight members in a household, an additional $219 is added to their food stamp benefits for each member.

SNAP benefits are loaded onto a monthly electronic benefits transfer card. Recipients have the convenience of swiping the card at grocery stores, similar to a debit card, to purchase a variety of eligible food products. These include fruits, vegetables, bread, meat, poultry, and drinks. However, it’s important to note that SNAP benefits cannot be used for items such as pet food, alcohol, and household items.

According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, CalFresh assistance is received by almost 5 million Californians, which accounts for approximately 13% of the state’s population.

To apply for SNAP benefits, receive additional information on how to apply, or track CalFresh benefits, Californians can visit the official government portal provided by the California Department of Social Services.
