Police actively search for two suspects in the fatal shooting of a 35-year-old man at Mt. Hope
The NYPD is seeking assistance from the public in identifying an individual captured in the attached photographs. They believe this person is one of the two individuals they are looking for in relation to a murder that took place in the Mt. Hope area of The Bronx the previous month.
On Sunday, October 1st, at approximately 5:10 PM, a male victim aged 35 was approached by two individuals who acted in coordination. The incident took place near East 175th Street and Grand Concourse. The perpetrators fired a gun at the victim, hitting him in the torso. According to the police, the identity of the attackers remains unknown.
According to a police spokesperson, the suspects escaped on a scooter in an unknown direction. The victim was taken by EMS to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The NYPD has reported a decline in overall crime in October, according to the latest crime statistics. This reduction is attributed to a continuous decrease in shootings and murders, along with an increase in arrests made across all seven major index crime categories.
The City saw a drop of 8.1% in shooting incidents in October 2023 as compared to October 2022, with only 79 incidents reported as opposed to 86. This trend is reflective of the 25.7% decrease in shooting incidents experienced throughout the city year to date, as compared to the same period in the previous year, with only 839 incidents reported as opposed to 1,129.
According to reports, there has been a significant decrease in the number of shooting incidents and murders in 2023 as compared to the previous year. It has been noted that there are 384 fewer shooting victims year to date in 2023, and 45 fewer people have been murdered this year. This is a remarkable achievement and a positive step towards ensuring public safety.
During October 2023, the NYPD reported that they had made 361 arrests for gun possession throughout the city. This brought the total number of gun-related arrests to 3,735 year-to-date through October.
The number of gun seizures across the five boroughs so far this year amounted to 5,585 by the end of October, reaching a total of 12,720 firearms being taken off the streets of New York City since the start of the Adams administration. These actions aim to keep firearms out of criminalsโ hands and make the city a safer place for all its residents.
In regards to the recent statistics that have been released, the police commissioner emphasized the importance of collaboration between the NYPD and the community. He stated, “It takes every individual in every neighborhood to take responsibility for public safety. The dedicated men and women of the NYPD are committed to working together with the people of our city to sustain low levels of crime and continue to decrease incidents of violence and disorder.”
As of November 5th, there has been a significant decrease in shootings throughout the Bronx this year. Year-to-date, the borough has experienced a 19.8% decrease in shootings, with 283 incidents in 2023 compared to 353 in 2022. Additionally, the number of shooting victims has decreased by 18.3%, with 340 victims in 2023 versus 416 in 2022.
The shooting incident took place in the 46th Precinct, which caters to the central area of the western Bronx, covering regions like Fordham, University Heights, Morris Heights, and Mt. Hope. Shockingly, the year-to-date shootings have increased by 28.1% in this area, with 41 incidents reported in 2023 as compared to 32 in 2022.
As of November 5th, the shooting victims in this precinct have increased by 44.4% year-to-date, with 52 victims in 2023 compared to 36 in 2022.
In Mt. Hope, two more shootings have been reported recently, one of which was fatal and the other non-fatal.
