Woman Receives Longer Sentence than Anticipated for Pushing Broadway Coach Resulting in His Death

At the sentencing of Lauren Pazienza for manslaughter last Friday (September 29), Manhattan state Supreme Court Judge Felicia Mennin expressed her scepticism regarding the 28-year-old Long Island woman’s acceptance of responsibility for her actions. On March 10, 2022, Pazienza pushed vocal teacher Barbara Maier Gustern to the ground, resulting in her death. Despite this, Judge Mennin was not convinced that Pazienza had taken full responsibility for the tragic incident.
Gustern, a renowned teacher who once had the pleasure of instructing Debbie Harry from the legendary band Blondie, tragically lost her life after suffering from severe injuries and bleeding on a sidewalk. Despite fighting for five days, she eventually succumbed to her injuries.
On August 23, Pazienza pleaded guilty and avoided a potential 25-year sentence that could have been handed down if she was convicted during a trial.
Pazienza, a former event planner from Long Island, has been incarcerated at the infamous Rikers Island jail complex since May 2022, when a judge revoked her bail.
As per the prosecutors, Pazienza assaulted Gustern following an abrupt exit from a park nearby, where she and her fiancé were enjoying food from a food cart.
