Kansas City Castle Near 18th and Vine District Hits the Market After Being Abandoned
Included in a package of redevelopment-ready real estate for sale is a 126-year-old limestone mansion formerly situated in the 18th & Vine Jazz District.
UrbanAmerica, a minority-owned development corporation with offices in Miami and Texas, has put the Kansas City Workhouse Castle, a historic yellow limestone structure at 2001 Vine St., as well as around 17.4 acres of surrounding land, for sale through Clemons Real Estate.
The Workhouse Castle was constructed in 1897 and served as a city jail until 1924. After thereafter, the castle was used for a variety of purposes, including city storage, Marine training, and dog euthanasia, before being decommissioned in 1972.
The castle was added to the Kansas City Register of Historic Places in 2007 but has since deteriorated. It is now directly across the street from Vine Street Brewing Co., which opened its doors in June as Missouri’s first Black-owned brewery in a limestone old public works facility.
In early 2022, UrbanAmerica sought to accelerate the refurbishment of the Workhouse Castle with event and retail space connected to a new-build 60-room boutique hotel.
Patrick Mahomes’ diet is revealed by the Kansas City Chiefs’ dietician. The project, along with 60 for-sale net-zero homes along Woodland Avenue, comprised the first phase of Enterprise Village Ecosystem (EVE), a roughly 21.5-acre master planned development UrbanAmerica considered in collaboration with businessman Vewiser Dixon, president of the Eighteenth and Vine Redevelopment Corp.
That identical property is now included in the new Clemons listing, which spans seven blocks in the Wendell Phillips area. The lots range in size from 0.72 to 9.4 acres. They total 21.2 acres, including the castle, and are primarily made up of unoccupied residential-platted lots.
