LaDay Arena Fatal Shooting Results in Indictments for Homicide and Perjury
A man from Hitchcock was recently charged with homicide, while the woman he was dating from Texas City was charged with aggravated perjury. These charges stem from a fatal shooting incident that occurred on April 9th in Jefferson County.
Javoris Potier, a 30-year-old man from Houston, found himself in the middle of a fight between several women, one of whom was Joelicia Evette Wade, a 31-year-old woman from Texas City. Tragically, while attempting to intervene and break up the altercation, Potier was shot at close range by John Joseph Gutierrez, a 25-year-old suspect. This shocking incident took place at LaDay Arena in Beaumont.
On the day of the shooting, the arena was filled with excitement as it played host to the I-10 Super Ride, a thrilling two-day tail ride and electrifying zydeco concert.
A fight erupted among several females from Galveston County moments before the shooting, as stated in a probable cause affidavit.
A witness observed Gutierrez fleeing from Potier with a firearm in his possession, while Potier exclaimed, “Why did you shoot me, man?”
According to the document, another witness claimed to have seen Gutierrez in possession of a firearm shortly before the shooting occurred.
It was later discovered that Gutierrez and Joelicia Evette Wade were involved in a romantic relationship, according to investigators.
Wade actively participated in the fight, while Potier was supposedly trying to court her.
During the investigation, Wade and her sister were both interviewed individually. It was discovered that both of them had provided false statements to the investigators in order to hide Gutierrez’s identity and his connection to Wade.
According to reports, Wade provided misleading responses during the grand jury inquiry when asked about the person she traveled with after leaving the event, neglecting to mention Gutierrez’s name.
The deputies suspect that Wade was dishonest and attempted to provide an alibi for Gutierrez, as stated in a probable cause affidavit.
