1. Gravois Park

With a population of 5,567, this area has a crime rate of 9,919 per 100,000, a staggering 323% higher than the national average. Shockingly, residents have a 1 in 11 chance of falling victim to any crime. In 2022 alone, 271 crimes were reported in Gravois Park, including 38 robberies, 47 assaults, 45 burglaries, and 27 cases of stolen vehicles.
2. JeffVanderLou
JVL, located in the heart of St. Louis, is considered one of the most challenging neighbourhoods. With a population of 4,209, JVL has a crime rate of 10,339 per 100,000, 341% higher than the national average. In 2022, the number of crimes reported in JVL was 241, including three murders, 17 robberies, 69 aggravated assaults, and 28 burglaries. The issues faced by JVL are mainly due to poverty and unemployment, with a median income of $20,499, which is 63% lower than the national average.
3. Central West End
The Central West End in St. Louis is notorious for being one of the most difficult neighbourhoods in the area. With a population of 15,762, it has a high rate of violent crimes, among the city’s worst. In fact, as of 2022, this area was ranked 208% more dangerous than the national average, with a staggering crime rate 7,217. Sadly, residents have a 1 in 14 chance of falling prey to crimes such as gun violence, homicides, burglaries, and car thefts, which are rampant in the vicinity.
4. DutchtownÂ
One of the most dangerous areas in St. Louis is Dutchtown. With a population of 17,000, Dutchtown has a crime rate of 6,731 per 100,000 people. Originally a German settlement, this neighbourhood now has a diverse immigrant population. Unfortunately, Dutchtown has been plagued with crime for decades due to poverty and urban decay. Shockingly, the crime rate in Dutchtown is 187% higher than the national average. In 2022, there were alarming statistics with two homicides, 47 robberies, 132 assaults, 88 burglaries, and 49 reports of stolen vehicles.
5. Tower Grove South
Located in South St. Louis, Tower Grove is known for being one of the most violent areas in the city, with a population of 13,719. According to recent statistics, Tower Grove has a crime rate of 5,110 per 100,000, 66% higher than the Missouri average. 2022 the neighbourhood reported 363 crimes, including 49 burglaries, 216 robberies, 25 assaults, and 35 stolen vehicles. Despite these alarming numbers, the median income in Tower Grove is $45,919, which is only 17% lower than the national average.
6. Bevo Mill
The high crime rates make Bevo Mill one of the worst neighbourhoods in St. Louis. It is named after the historic mill located in the centre of the neighbourhood and has a population of 11,941. Bevo Mill has a crime rate of 4,731 per 100,000, 102% higher than the national average. Residents of Bevo Mill have a 1 in 22 chance of becoming a victim of any crime. Although Bevo Mill is a diverse neighbourhood and home to many immigrants from the former Yugoslavia, the area remains generally unsafe. 7. Carondelet
Carondelet, a town with a population of 8,588, has a crime rate that is significantly higher, i.e., 175%, than the national average. 2022 saw 315 reported crimes, including 15 robberies, 47 assaults, 41 burglaries, 165 larcenies, and 40 vehicle thefts. Most of the crimes in Carondelet are related to property crimes; fortunately, there were no reported murders in 2022. Sadly, Carondelet faces poverty-related issues, with a median income of only $33,642.
