Multi-vehicle crash on I-80 in NW Indiana results in 2 hospitalizations and DUI charge for female driver
Early Saturday morning, a multi-vehicle crash occurred on I-80 in Northwest Indiana, resulting in two people being airlifted and a woman facing charges for driving while intoxicated, according to Indiana State Police.
A 33-year-old woman named Rivianna Gilmore, who resides in Calumet Park, has been charged with several felonies related to driving under the influence and causing serious injury. In addition to these charges, she is also facing multiple misdemeanors, including endangerment.
At approximately 4:14 a.m., the Indiana State Police reported that a black Nissan collided with an arrow board sign located on the right shoulder. The sign was strategically placed to warn oncoming traffic of an impending lane shift.
As a result of the initial crash, the arrow board ended up in the middle of the road, causing further mayhem. Two additional collisions occurred as drivers swerved to avoid the debris.
According to authorities, one of the drivers involved in the accident was trapped inside their van and had to be rescued before being airlifted to Chicago for treatment of critical injuries.
The driver of a black GMC pickup was also involved in the accident and suffered serious injuries. They were later air-lifted to Oak Lawn for treatment.
The driver who came third in the race sustained only minor injuries, thankfully.
