Worker’s body discovered in Mississippi River, presumed to be from a barge
Port of New Orleans officials announced on Monday afternoon that they had discovered a body in the Mississippi River in Jefferson Parish. The body is believed to be that of a barge worker who had gone missing over the weekend.
The Coast Guard reported that Darrel Roberson, a 55-year-old worker, was reported missing at approximately 3 a.m. on Saturday. Roberson was last sighted in blue coveralls, working on a barge in the river near the Huey P. Long Bridge, according to Coast Guard officials.
Rescue crews covered approximately 164 square nautical miles and traveled over 20 miles downriver during the Coast Guard’s search, which began in the morning and was suspended after nearly 10 hours.
According to port officials, the Jefferson Parish Coroner’s Office has been handed the body for identification. However, WWL-TV has reported that the family of Roberson has confirmed the identity of the body as Roberson.
