Driver and Passenger Killed in Car Explosion at New York-Canada Border: Here’s What We Know
On Wednesday, a man aged 56 was reportedly driving his luxury car when it exploded on a bridge located on the U.S.-Canada border, resulting in the tragic deaths of both him and his wife.
Reports suggest that a couple, who had planned to attend a KISS concert in Toronto on Wednesday night, were left disappointed when the event was canceled at the last minute due to a band member falling ill. However, the couple made the most of their night by visiting a New York casino before embarking on a trip to Niagara Falls in their stylish two-door Bentley Excelsior.
During an appearance on CNN’s The Situation Room on Wednesday evening, law enforcement analyst John Miller reported that the driver of the vehicle, who was rumored to reside on a luxurious island in New York, rapidly accelerated as he approached a checkpoint and crashed into a barrier on the Rainbow Bridge, causing the car to detonate upon contact.
According to Miller, the intense collision does not exhibit any signs of terrorism. Instead, it appears to be a tragic accident.
During an evening press conference, Governor Kathy Hochul made it clear that there was no evidence that the vehicle explosion was linked to terrorism.
According to Hocul, the investigation is still in progress, but it seems there is no immediate danger to the surrounding area.
According to Andrew McCabe, the former Deputy Director of the FBI, the collision that resulted in the injury of a U.S. Customs and Border officer did not seem to be intentional.
Speaking to Blitzer, he stated that the crash details strongly suggest a catastrophic accident or a reckless and irresponsible driving act.
McCabe explained that due to the Bentley’s heavy weight and immense power, combined with the incredible distance it traveled and the height it reached in order to clear the fence, it was fortunate that there weren’t more fatalities.
Authorities have confirmed that no explosives were found at the crash site.
According to an anonymous law enforcement official who spoke to The New York Times, the individual behind the wheel is suspected to be a frequent traveler between the United States and Canada. The source also stated that the driver has no previous criminal record but is known to have a penchant for gambling.
According to reports, he and his wife hold American citizenship.
