Investigation underway into deadly Newstead accident
At 7:54 A.M. on September 30, 2023, Troopers from SP Clarence were called to the scene of a three-vehicle collision on State Route 5 in Newstead.
According to the investigation, a 2011 Kia and a 2017 Chevrolet travelled eastbound on State Route 5. The Kia stopped to turn into a driveway, and unfortunately, the Chevrolet hit the rear of the Kia. The impact caused the Chevrolet to cross the centre line, leading to a head-on collision with a 2019 Honda. Tragically, Keith C. Wagner, a 54-year-old from Rochester, NY and the operator of the Honda was pronounced dead at the scene. The 18-year-old operator of the Kia suffered severe injuries and was transported to Erie County Medical Center by Mercy Flight. It’s important to note that the 18-year-old operator of the Kia was not wearing a seat belt.
The investigation is still ongoing.
The investigation was carried out with the assistance of NYSP Collision Reconstruction and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
