JCSO Reports Man’s Arrest for Scamming Senior Citizen with Fake Tiny House, Stealing $34,000
A man wanted by the authorities in Johnston County has been apprehended in Wilson County. Robert Ward Evans Jr., a 57-year-old Wilson and Kinston, NC resident, has been charged with two felony counts of obtaining property by pretence.
In May 2023, Evans, who runs Cornerstone Enterprise, met with an 83-year-old man from Johnston County. During the meeting, Evans promised to construct a 14 by 40-foot tiny home and deliver it for $29,000. The older man trusted Evans and paid him the agreed amount.
According to reports in June 2022, Evans reached out to the man once more and requested an extra $5,000 to cover the HVAC system installation. Without hesitation, the victim provided the additional funds.
According to the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office, Evans reneged on his promise to deliver the tiny house to the victim. Additionally, despite numerous attempts by the victim to contact him, Evans neglected to respond to any of the phone calls or messages left for him.
On July 25, the Sheriff’s office was contacted by the victim, which led to a thorough investigation that lasted a month. Eventually, warrants were obtained, and on August 30, Robert Ward Evans Jr. was located and arrested by the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office. He has been released on a secured bond, and a court appearance in Johnston County is pending. Unfortunately, a mugshot for Evans was unavailable at the time of writing.
