Washington State Business Faces Closure: Mass Layoffs as Firm Shuts Down Operations

A Washington State company is closing down, resulting in mass layoffs

Another company is closing its doors in the state of Washington.

Micrsocan, based in Renton, manufactures a variety of industrial barcode readers. Omron, the Japanese technology behemoth, bought it in 2017 and renamed it Omron-Microscan. Omron has already declared that it would close the Renton office and lay off all 57 employees.

The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act requires employers with more than 100 full-time employees to give a 60-day notice before laying off 50 or more people at a single location.

Omron notified the Washington Employment Security Department that 57 employees would be put off on February 2.

Washington Job Cuts

Although layoffs are happening across the country, Washington is one of the hardest hit.

All employees of the technology company Zulily were laid off and the Seattle headquarters ceased operations, the company announced last week.

Over 38,000 workers in Washington State have been laid off as of 2023. This is the fourth most in any state and represents a significant increase from 2022, when Washington employers lay off 19,000 jobs.
