According to reports, Zhontay Capers has been charged with murder in the case of Bernard Gribbin’s death. Gribbin had been associated with the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) for 12 years before he was allegedly shot by Capers in Philadelphia as he was getting off the bus. The accused, 21-year-old Capers, was arrested by the Philadelphia Police Department for the crime. A picture of Capers has been released by the department, while Gribbin’s image can be found on his Facebook page.
According to prosecutors, Zhontay Capers has been charged with murder in connection with the death of Bernard Gribbin, a long-time employee of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA). The incident took place on Thursday morning at around 10:30 a.m. when Gribbin arrived at a bus stop located at the intersection of Germantown and Abbottsford Avenues. Capers allegedly fired shots at him, hitting him on the right side, and then exited the bus before turning around and firing again. Sadly, Gribbin passed away later at the hospital due to the injuries sustained in the attack.
After fleeing the scene, Capers was eventually apprehended and charged with multiple offenses by Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner. Along with the murder charge, Capers is facing charges of recklessly endangering another person, possession of an instrument of crime with intent, and carrying a firearm without a license.
In a statement on X, formerly known as Twitter, he expressed his disappointment in the incident that occurred on SEPTA on Thursday. He stated that what happened was completely unacceptable and all citizens of Philadelphia have the right to feel secure while using public transportation, especially those who work hard to provide essential services to our city.
According to reports from local Fox affiliate WTXF, witnesses recounted that passengers panicked and attempted to flee the bus by jumping out of windows and emergency exits when a female suspect shot and killed the SEPTA driver onboard. Fortunately, no other individuals were harmed during the incident.
According to reports, the police have not yet been able to ascertain the motive behind the shooting. However, the family of Capers has issued a statement to WTXF, revealing that she was going through a mental health crisis at the time of the incident.
According to the statement, Zhontay’s grandmother, who was her caretaker, passed away recently after a brief struggle with cancer. This tragic event seemed to be the tipping point for Zhontay, who isolated herself from her family during a particularly paranoid episode. Despite concerns from her loved ones, she did not meet the requirements for involuntary hospitalization.
Upon receiving news about the shooting, the family finally heard from her after some time. They expressed their disappointment towards the mental health system, which they believe failed her.
The statement concluded with a heartfelt desire for the individual to receive the necessary mental health support after justice has been served.
Over the weekend, Gribbin’s loved ones and colleagues came together to pay tribute to him by releasing balloons. His co-workers expressed their admiration for him, acknowledging him as both an outstanding employee and a dear friend.
According to Keith Bradford, the SEPTA Midvale District union representative, Bernard’s tragic incident has left us all devastated as we can relate to his situation. As quoted in the local ABC affiliate WPVI, Keith said, “We all come here just to take care of our families just like Bernard did. None of us expect that when we put our uniform on in the morning that will be the last time we will come back.” It’s a painful reality that all of us have to face, and our thoughts and prayers go out to Bernard’s family and loved ones.
Bradford expressed his concern and frustration with the situation, stating that they needed to invest in a bulletproof door or some other type of security measure. He questioned why Bernard had lost his life, emphasizing that he was simply doing his job. The gravity of the situation weighed heavily on Bradford and he was determined to take action to prevent any similar incidents from happening in the future.
Despite challenging circumstances, Gribbin always maintained an optimistic outlook.
According to the outlet, Bradford shared that Bernard always encouraged them to stay positive, even in tough situations. “He would laugh at us and say to keep our head up and keep moving forward,” Bradford recounted.
