Upcoming California Coast Waves Expected to Reach Heights of 40 Feet, Offering Epic Surfing Conditions
The National Weather Service has issued a High Surf Warning and Coastal Flood Advisory for several regions, including San Francisco, Coastal North Bay Including Point Reyes National Seashore, San Francisco Peninsula Coast, Northern Monterey Bay, Southern Monterey Bay, and Big Sur Coast Counties.
The advisory cautions about the presence of extremely high breaking waves, which can range from 28 to 33 feet, and may even reach heights of up to 40 feet at certain locations.
The High Surf Warning will be in effect from 3 AM Thursday to 3 AM PST Friday. This means that surf conditions will subside on Friday, only to be followed by another large swell arriving on Saturday.
The warning will have various effects, including causing minor coastal flooding. This will result in flooding in many areas, such as parks, lots, and roads, and may lead to isolated road closures.
The crashing waves present a significant danger, as they have the ability to forcefully sweep people off jetties and docks and into treacherous waters.
Swimming conditions that pose a risk to life are anticipated, along with substantial erosion of the beaches.
The current tidal levels are exceeding the predicted levels by approximately 1 foot. The high tide is expected to reach its peak around 10:46 AM PST on Wednesday, ranging between 7.0 to 7.5 feet above MLLW.
Low-lying, flood-prone areas adjacent to the San Francisco Bay may experience minor coastal flooding as a result.
If you live in the affected areas, it is important to take the necessary precautions and make sure you allow extra time for travel. Some roads may be closed, so it’s important to plan accordingly.
Driving around barricades or through water of unknown depth can have serious consequences. It is important to remember not to engage in such actions.
People should stay away from the water because of dangerous surf conditions and should also avoid jetties, piers, and other waterside structures. If you live in an area prone to flooding, make sure to take the necessary steps to protect your belongings.
Strong southerly winds and increasing surf are expected to cause coastal flooding along the Pacific Ocean starting on Wednesday.
