Deputies Reported Juvenile safe after multi-county chase, suspect arrested

According to officials in Gaston County, a suspect who allegedly kidnapped a juvenile from Georgia on Sunday has been arrested.

The Gaston County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) reported that at approximately 9:23 a.m., one of their deputies spotted a car being driven by Matthew Penny, who is 40 years old.

According to authorities, Penny is currently being sought for several serious charges, including drug possession, firearm possession by a felon, and failing to appear in court, all related to the alleged kidnapping incident. These are considered to be outstanding felony warrants that must be addressed immediately.

It was reported by WSOC-TV that there was a possible child abduction attempt in Belmont. The article also mentioned that a suspect was arrested during the incident.

Law enforcement officers initiated the pursuit on I-85 South near Exit 13, and it continued on the interstate until it reached Cherokee County, S.C. At this point, the South Carolina Highway Patrol took over the chase.

According to officials, Penny was said to have exited I-85 at Exit 100, where he drove into a ditch near the exit before fleeing the scene. However, he was later apprehended in the vicinity.

As per the GCSO, the juvenile who was reported missing has been found safe and sound. Moreover, Penny has been taken into custody in South Carolina.

Penny will face severe charges in Gaston County, as he will be charged with felony flee/elude, driving with a revoked license, speeding, careless and reckless driving, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and possession of a stolen vehicle. These charges should not be taken lightly and may result in a significant penalty. It is essential to follow the law and traffic regulations to avoid such consequences.
